We have been planning a group knitted blanket with the knitting club. We decided on an Irish theme so that we could raffle it off in the Irish club. I am not Irish myself so I didn't mind what the subject was. I was nominated to do the central pattern which was decided to be the Irish claddagh, I had no idea what this was and worried a bit at first that I wouldn't do it justice but I think they will be pleased with it when they see it next week. The claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring given to represent love, loyalty and friendship (the hands represent friendship, the heart love and the crown loyalty. The design and customs of the ring origionated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh and was first made in the 17th century.
I am planning to make a knitted cable border with shamrock squares for the corners.
I have also made a start on a pair of elf slippers, I have finished one and need to start the other.
I have been having a bit of fun this week adapting this turtle pattern that I found in a book. The original pattern was just plain patches. I decided to add flowers and sew ridges around the hexagons to make the shell more rigid.
